How Chinese Medicine helps Autoimmune infertility

Women with autoimmune disease are clearly at risk for miscarriages and poor reproductive outcomes. Western Medicine often recommends blood thinners (Aspirin, Heparin and Levenox), steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin.

Chinese medicine has been treating autoimmune infertility for thousands of years. Treatments focus on achieving inner body balance such as:

  • Clearing the heat and draining dampness to reduce inflammation.
  • Helping circulation to move obstruction and stagnation.
  • Reinforcing Yin energy to tonify Kidney Yin deficiency.
  • Strengthening both Kidney Yin and Yang to prevent miscarriage.
  • Reducing stress to prevent excess heat and Qi stagnation.

Based upon Chinese Medicine assessment, patients usually receive weekly acupuncture and herbs for their particular imbalance. They also will learn how to take care of themselves to avoid exhaustion and release stress by using meditations. Generally, we suggest patients stay away from processed foods, sweets, spicy foods, caffeine and non-organic meats. Other lifestyle changes such as moderate exercise and at least seven to eight hours of sleep each day.

Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine for Luteal Phase Defect

The luteal phase is after ovulation has occurred, conception has taken place and the embryo is already in the uterus. During this period, we need to make sure that conditions remain favorable for an implantation and further growth of the embryo.

Patients that have Luteal Phase Defect are often frustrated when they are trying to get pregnant. I often see patients have shorter or unpredictable menstrual cycle, spotting several days before period, slow step like pattern of BBT graph and temperature rising less than 0.4 ℉ in the BBT chart. Even if an egg is fertilized patients still have a hard time getting or staying pregnant. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on Kidney Yang function which means keeping the womb-warm by nourishing blood and promoting Qi.

We use blood and Kidney tonic herbs to fortify endometrial lining and allow it to be thick enough, and also sufficiently secrete nutrients to nourish an embryo. In addition, acupuncture is successful in increasing the flow of blood to the uterus. Acupuncture also promotes Qi as helping the embryo binds to the endometrium and then burrows into the lining. Stronger Qi not only makes the uterine lining hold the embryo securely but also avoid miscarriages.

If anyone has Luteal Phase Defect or has uterine lining issues please contact us by email info@acupunctureofdallas.com or by calling us at 972-671-6688.

Acupuncture increases IVF Success Rate-Acupuncture of Dallas Fertility

The success rate of treating infertility with Chinese medicine can be hard to determine since acupuncture’s treatment of infertility is a cumulative one. However, in 2008 studies were done to show that Acupuncture may increase IVF success rates by 65%. While these numbers only show a quantitative increase, acupuncture also focuses on the overall well-being of a person. It’s not just the number of eggs produced, it’s the quality of the eggs produced. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine seeks to nourish and stimulate the eggs to grow. Acupuncture is also found to improve the thickness and quality of the endometrial lining(enrich the blood flow).

As we have mentioned before, the optimal time to start acupuncture treatment is three months before the beginning of the IVF cycle. This will help ensure that your eggs and sperm are of the best quality that they can be. It often takes about 3 months for the eggs and sperm to mature. Those three months are also used to make sure that the periods function well with no cramps and clots, no dark red flow. Additionally, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine will address any underlying issues such as PMS, Endometriosis, PCOS, ovulation issues, High FSH etc. So, it is these months of regulating the reproductive system that gives you a much higher chance of success with IVF/IUI.

It is common to have higher stress during the IVF cycle and the possibility of side effects from drugs. Acupuncture can help reduce stress and side effects during IVF cycle.

If you are about to start an IVF/IUI cycle or just failed a medicated cycle, please contact us at 972-671-6688 or visit our website for more information on what we can do. Additionally, we have testimonials from IVF patients who used Acupuncture to conceive.

Acupuncture Helps Blood Flow for Fertility Patients

Our previous topic was why is blood flow important to fertility, today we will focus on how Acupuncture helps blood flow for fertility patients.

Acupuncture increases blood flow by deregulating(slowing down) the nervous system which in turn causes the blood vessels to dilate. When the blood vessels are dilated, they release more nutrient rich blood to the ovaries and uterus. When you improve blood flow to the ovaries, it increases estrogen rates and lowers FSH which will ultimately help you conceive. Increasing blood flow to the uterus will also help make the uterine lining thick which makes implantation easier. Poor egg quality can also be attributed to decreased circulation to the ovaries and uterus. In that case, Acupuncture can help increase blood circulation and flow thus improving egg quality.

A study published in Human Reproduction showed that after 8 acupuncture sessions uteral blood flow increased greatly. Those treatments combined with an acupuncture session before embryo transfer resulted in significant increases in pregnancy rate. (StenerVictorin E, et al Hum Reprod 1996; 11:1314-1317. Human Reproduction).

If you suffer from poor blood flow please visit our website at www.acupunctureofdallas.com or give us a call at 9726716688.  Next time we will discuss how to know if you have poor blood flow.

Why Blood Flow is so important to Fertility

The last few blog posts we discussed how Acupuncture can help hormonal balance. Starting from today, we will continue for a few blog posts about how Acupuncture can help blood flow.

Blood delivers nutrients, hormones, and oxygen throughout the body. For women who are trying to conceive, blood helps balance and normalize the reproductive organ functions. By improving blood flow, we help the reproductive organs in their task of conception.

Blood delivers nutrients: A good blood flow to the uterus and ovaries are necessary to provide the reproductive system the nutrients it needs. A decrease in nutrients may affect the body’s hormones and cause fatigue which may impact fertility. Once a woman becomes pregnant, it becomes extremely important that blood flow is increased so that the necessary nutrients can flow through the mother’s body to the fetus.

Blood helps hormone flow: As discussed previously, hormones are controlled and transported through the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis (HPO axis) to the reproductive organs. These reproductive organs need a sufficient blood flow. The endometrial lining, for example, must be thick to allow the embryo to develop. Ovarian health is also affected by blood flow and hormonal state.

Not only does blood transport the necessary oxygen to your reproductive system, it also removes the CO2 and other waste items from your cells thus removing general toxins from your body and improving your overall and reproductive health.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs help poor egg quality and High FSH

Many women who suffer from high FSH and poor egg quality are told by Western Medicine doctors that there is a slim chance for conception. However, Acupuncture and Herbs can reduce FSH levels and increase egg quality by improving general health, increasing blood flow, and balancing reproductive hormones.

Herbs combined with Acupuncture and lifestyle changes can make a difference in improving egg quality. The quality of the egg is largely dependent on the hormone levels and general health of the body. In Dr. Zhou’s experience, poor egg quality and High FSH reflects a poor state of health rather than an inability to conceive. A stressful lifestyle is one of the largest contributing factors to poor egg quality.

As mentioned previously here, Acupuncture increases blood flow to the ovaries that will help nourish the ovaries and increase the ovarian function. In particular, Acupuncture and herbs build a stronger more nourished blood flow that increases the oxygen and nutrients available to the ovaries.

Acupuncture influences fertility by normalizing the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian Axis.  Stress disrupts hormonal communications between the brain and ovaries causing a hormonal imbalance. These imbalances can lead to irregular cycles, poor egg quality, and lack of ovulation.

For best results, Dr. Zhou recommends that patients commit to three months of Acupuncture and Herbs. This is primarily because follicular development takes three cycles to mature, so it is best to start treatment during its primary stage. Remember, nature cannot be forced into balance, having enough preparation time is essential for the body to balance itself. The Use of Acupuncture directly before Embryo Transfer| Acupuncture of Dallas

The Use of Acupuncture Directly Before Embryo Transfer

Acupuncture has increasingly grown in popularity as a method of enhancing an IVF cycle, particularly during the Embryo Transfer.  Acupuncture helps increase blood flow and circulation to the uterus which helps create a thicker uterine lining and enhances embryo implantation and growth. Acupuncture also helps in stabilizing hormones and relaxing the cervix and uterus creating an easier transfer process.

In a recent study the London Bridge Fertility, Gynaecology, and Genetics Centre of London did a research experiment on the positive effects of using acupuncture before and after Embryo Transfer. In the Acupuncture group, positive pregnancy rates were 44.6% comparing favourably to the non-Acupuncture group. In particular, Acupuncture was found to be most effective in women between 35-39 and  40+ age groups. This suggests that the use of Acupuncture during embryo transfer may be more effective in older women.

We generally recommend every IVF patient to come at least one month before the IVF cycle, however, if they have uterine lining issues to come three months before the transfer. Additionally, we also recommend that every IVF patient comes in for treatment the same day as the embryo transfer. If you are about to start the IVF cycle or frozen embryo transfer cycle please give our office a call at 972-671-6688 and visit our website for more information.
